My /loop ran for fourteen hours in a backpack. The agent shipped a PR before I got home. SHIM is real engineering.
SHIM.
Your agent doesn't sleep. Now your laptop doesn't either.
A 25-second demonstration of sustained inference.
A class of failure that wasn't possible three years ago.
Long-running agentic workloads have outgrown the chassis they run on. The portable workstation, optimized for two decades of human-driven sessions, was never designed to host a runtime that thinks for hours.
Your agent has been thinking for forty-three minutes. The lid closes. The Hall-effect sensor triggers. The kernel suspends. Eleven thousand tokens of context — gone.
before context collapse
lid-close event
operator transit
Four-stage passive wakelock.
SHIM occupies the hinge aperture between lid and chassis, maintaining a static 10.4mm separation that holds the magnetic field strength beneath the Hall-effect sensor's activation threshold. No software. No power draw. No telemetry.
Engage
Apply SHIM along the hinge aperture, posterior of the lid pivot. Self-locating geometry — no alignment required.
Maintain
TPU substrate sustains a 10.4mm static gap under load. Designed for transit-grade compression cycles.
Bypass
Magnetic flux density at the sensor stays below the wake threshold. Clamshell condition is never registered.
Persist
Runtime continues. Subagents continue. /loop continues. Bag, train, plane, café — the session does not collapse.
From desk
to bag, uninterrupted.
A real session, observed in transit. The agent's context window is preserved across the operator's commute. No software intervention. No external power.
Engineered to ±0.1mm.
Every SHIM unit is individually inspected against a tolerance band tighter than the pivot tolerance of the host hardware. The specifications below apply across the full compatibility matrix.
Five finishes. One geometry.
Pigment is integrated into the substrate at compound stage. The unit is colored throughout — no surface coating, no degradation over time, no flaking.
Universal across the Apple Silicon matrix.
The hinge aperture geometry has remained dimensionally consistent across all Apple Silicon generations. A single SHIM form factor covers the supported product matrix.
Observed in production.
Selected accounts from operators running sustained agentic workloads on portable hardware.
Headless inference, but now actually headless. I haven't had to resume a Claude Code session in six weeks.
I no longer carry an open laptop through airport security. The TSA agents have stopped looking at me strangely. My partner is grateful.
Context preservation guaranteed. Bag → desk → bag, no resume, no compaction, no apology to my agent. This should ship in the box.
Reserve a unit.
Manufacturing allocation opens by serial. Enroll to receive a unit from the first production batch — $12 at ship, free worldwide.
Answered.
When does SHIM ship?
The first production batch is in tooling. Enrollees are allocated by enrollment timestamp and receive a serial number plus an estimated shipping window via email. Referrals advance position in the allocation queue.
Will SHIM scratch my MacBook?
No. The TPU substrate (95A durometer) is significantly softer than anodized aluminum. The contact surface has been profiled for zero-trace engagement, including at the lid coating interface. Long-term residue: none observed across our internal compression cycle testing.
Does SHIM work with M4 hardware?
Yes. SHIM is forward-compatible. The Hall-effect sensor geometry and lid pivot tolerances have remained dimensionally consistent across all Apple Silicon generations. The current SKU is verified against M1, M2, M3, and M4 chassis.
Is this a joke?
No. SHIM is a precision-manufactured passive hardware module, produced to ±0.1mm tolerance and individually inspected before fulfillment. Each unit ships with a serialized inspection record.
Why is there only one size?
The hinge aperture is dimensionally standardized across the supported product matrix. A single form factor eliminates inventory complexity and fulfillment latency. We are aware of the constraint and have, after consideration, retained it.
What happens if I lose mine?
You acquire another one. They are $12 and ship in a padded envelope.
Could I just use caffeinate?
The caffeinate utility suppresses idle sleep at the software layer. It does not intervene against the Hall-effect sensor, which triggers a hardware-level suspend on lid closure independent of operating-system state. SHIM operates beneath that abstraction.
